Prof. Stephen Hawking CH, CBE, FRS, delivered the Albert Einstein Lecture 2001 on "Predicting the Future: From Astrology to Black Holes" on January 17, 2001. The holder of the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, England, Prof. Hawking visited the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, on a Sarojini Damodaran Fellowship to participate in the Strings 2001 conference. His talk, to a capacity audience of about 4000 at Siri Fort Auditorium, was a phenomenal success. Special arrangements were made for disabled access as well as sign-language translation for the hearing-impaired. The lecture is included in his book The Universe in a Nutshell. Stephen and Elaine Hawking were received by the President of India Mr. K. R. Narayanan at his official residence, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, for a 45-minute meeting, which was widely noted in the national press. For the first time, the issue of disabled rights came into public focus and special ramps were put up at Delhi's historic monuments.
